Saving OBJ to network drive very slow
« on: March 27, 2017, 02:03:40 PM »
When exporting a mesh from Meshmixer v 11.0.544 to a network drive, the process is very slow, and can easily take several minutes.
Doing the same to a local drive is nice and fast.

Don't know your used transfer technologies. So please give further information about your system.
Just to give you some example of transfer rates:

E.g:
Wireless network 802.11n does up to 75 MB/s
PCI Express (internal computer bus) 3.0 does up to 984.6 MB/s
Means PCI 3.0 is about 13 times faster.

plus: SSD or standard HDDs?

... several reasons which may cause this read/write difference. Different transfer rates of your hardware make quite a difference on big files (as many OBJs are) performing read/write actions.
I'm just a user as you are. Being no Autodesk employee: I do not know where this road will lead to, nor do I claim to've all stuff got right.

Yes you are right, this is of course relevant. We are on a Gigabit Ethernet network that has a write rate of about 100 MByte/s (just measured it).

The reason I did not include this is that the OBJ write speed of Meshmixer is much slower than that of Meshlab, for example, when writing to the same drive. So something seems to be different in how Meshmixer writes those OBJs that causes a massive slowdown.
